Undergraduate/Graduate Scholarships

Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library Scholarship
The scholarship, awarded by Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library Committee, is given annually to an Interior Architecture major whose focus of study relates to home furnishings.

Child Development Scholarship
Dr. Frances Cope established this scholarship to provide support for students majoring in Child Development. She graduated from Woman's College in 1947 with a degree in Home Economics, and one of only two students with a major in Child Development.

Ellen Hickman Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1975 in memory of Ellen Hickman, a graduate in child development. The award is given annually to a student majoring in Human Development and Family Studies and based on academic achievement.

Esther F. Segner Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the School of Human Environmental Sciences in memory of Esther F. Segner, former faculty member in the School of Home Economics. Recipients must display academic merit.

Frances B. Buchanan Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies major in memory of Dr. Buchanan who served on the faculty for fourteen years in the Department of Textile Products Design.

John C. Lockhart Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor Mr. Lockhart, who was a friend and supporter of the School of Home Economics. In 1946, Lockhart helped to establish the Home Economics Foundation, of which he was secretary-treasurer until October, 1962.

Linda and Roy Arrington Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1988 by Roy Arrington, owner of the Addams University Book Store. Awards are made annually to a student majoring in Interior Architecture and are based on academic merit.

Mildred B. Davis Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Miss Davis, a former member of the Nutrition and Foodservice faculty. Preference is given to a Nutrition student who has outstanding academic achievement and shows interest in a career in nutrition education; however, an exceptional graduate student may be considered for the award.

Miriam Scott Mayo and Hazeleene Tate Scott Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Miriam Scott Mayo, an alumna, in memory of her mother, Hazeleene Tate Scott. It is awarded annually to a student who demonstrates a high level of academic excellence in the School of Human Environmental Sciences.

Nell Wilborn Thayer Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Helen Thayer Bowling '33 and Harry L. Bowling in memory of Mrs. Bowling's mother, Nell Wilborn Thayer. The Nell Wilborn Thayer Scholarship is awarded to students who have declared a field of study within the School of Human Environmental Sciences.

Pamela A. and Richard R. Allen Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1989 by Richard Allen, Chairman of the Board of LADD Furniture Company and past president of the Human Environmental Sciences Foundation. The award is given to a student in Interior Architecture who plans to work in the furniture industry.

S. Virginia Wilson Scholarship in Human Environmental Sciences
This scholarship was established with a gift from the estate of Virginia Wilson's sister, Ruth C. Wilson '25. Virginia Wilson graduated from the North Carolina College for Women in 1926 with a degree in Home Economics and later received a MS at Columbia.

Sue Ramsey Johnston Ferguson Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1978 in memory of Sue Ramsey Johnson Ferguson. Mrs. Ferguson served as president of the Home Economics Foundation and as president of the Home Economics Alumni Association.

Thomas B. Scullion International Program Award
This program was established in 2000 with a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Scullion, his friends and colleagues. Dr. Scullion was Chair of the Social Work Department and instrumental in forming a relationship between UNCG and Strathclyde University in Scotland.
