CARS Focuses on Global Apparel and Retailing Industries

CARS group at Harrods

CARS students have the opportunity to learn about and experience first hand the global nature of the apparel and retailing industries through state-of-the-arts curriculum offerings, participation in study tours, and study abroad through exchange programs. Through a USDA Higher Education Challenge Grant, faculty in the department are developing innovative ways to address real-world industry based issues and challenges. Collaborations with faculty and students at universities in the U.S. as well as Thailand, Australia, and Russia provide a global forum for student learning. The goal is to ensure that graduates of the CARS program have the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in today's global workplace.

Students in the CARS program also have the opportunity to participate in study tours to New York City, London (CARS group shown above at Harrods), Thailand (summer 2008), Ghana (summer 2009) and to study abroad through exchange programs in the UK, New Zealand, France, Australia, and Italy to name a few.

Graduate Opportunities

CARS consortium presentation

The CARS program offers both an MS and PhD in Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies. Students conduct research under the guidance of internationally recognized faculty scholars (Kathryn Brown shown at right) on topics related to consumer and the apparel and retailing industries. CARS graduate students are actively engaged in sharing their research at national and international forums, including the annual meeting of the International Textile and Apparel Association, the American Collegiate Retailing Association, as well as the Southeastern Graduate Consortium. This year's consortium will be hosted by the CARS program at UNCG in April 2008.

Undergraduate Student Design Work Exhibited in Los Angeles

Kelly Cox modeling dress

A dress designed and made by Kelly Cox, a 2007 graduate of the Apparel Product Design concentration, was on exhibit October 29 through November 12 in the Art Department Gallery at California State University, Los Angeles. The exhibit is a juried group exhibit of work by students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as work by faculty who are members of the International Textile and Apparel Association.

Kelly's dress (modeled at right) was her response to an assignment in APD 545: Experimental Materials, Spring 2007; students were challenged to drape a dress using one continuous 4-yard length of fabric without making any cuts in the fabric.

CARS Internship Program

Megan Young at Nordstroms

As a requirement for graduation, all CARS students are required to engage in a supervised industry internship. These internships offer students real world experiences before graduation in areas such as design, merchandising, marketing, promotion, retailing, and forecasting. Prior to the internship experience, students enroll in a professional development class in which they receive guidance and preparation for a successful internship experience, including cover letter and resume writing, mock interviews, and various other learning experiences of importance to succeeding in global careers. During the summer of 2007, forty CARS students were placed in internships with Kellwood Global in NY, VF Corporation in Greensboro, Nordstrom in Tampa (Megan Young shown above at Nordstrom), Styling Your Image, LLC in Los Angeles, as well as in international locations in Turkey and Bermuda among others. Many of these students were offered full time employment at the conclusion of the internship.
