Steps to Applying for a Grant
A properly prepared proposal has a better chance of obtaining funding than a poorly prepared one. Your goal is not to be eliminated!
STEP 1. Spread the word. Contact the following offices for guidance and to alert them of your plans and relevant deadlines:
- HES Office of Research, contact Dr. Marion O'Brien;
- Office of Sponsored Programs, contact Charna Howson (334-4316). Submit the Intent
to Apply Form to OSP. They will help you submit the proposal electronically
before the deadline, after they receive approval and signatures from your
department and school (see Green Folder process below);
- Keep your department chair updated!
STEP 2. Consultation and preparation. You won't need to re-invent the wheel!:
- Visit our "Investigator's Toolbox" section at the bottom of this page;
- Prepare the proposal according to the requirements or specifications of the potential sponsor and within any format that the sponsor may stipulate;
- Take advantage of the experience of colleagues and members of the faculty and staff who have knowledge that can be useful in program or project design and in proposal preparation;
- Contact the HES Office of Research for help and resources.
STEP 3. Green Folder*. Pre-Award Forms are routed to OSP in a Green Folder (a regular green file folder). The folder should contain all items on the Checklist and be routed to the appropriate offices for review and signatures:
- In addition to the Green Folder items, HES faculty should complete a HES Planning Form form to be signed by the Department Chair and included with the folder to be routed;
- *RAMSeS electronic proposal submission will replace the Green Folder process in the near future (target date is December 2007).
STEP 4. Submit the completed Green Folder with proposal and detailed budget to the HES Office of Research for review and signature; the folder will be routed to OSP unless otherwise noted.
