The School of Human Environmental Sciences (HES) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro operates an experimental research station as part of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service (NCARS) through North Carolina State University, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Faculty research projects are USDA approved and range from basic research involving laboratory experiments with humans and animals, to applied research that focuses on improving the quality of life for individuals and families. The NCARS faculty conduct important human sciences research and training in the field of nutrition intervention and health; family diversity, strengths, and stability; health, safety, and the environment; and workforce issues in the textile industry.

1) Family Diversity, Strengths, and Stability:

  • Heather Helms, PhD - New parents of Mexican origin: Marital well-being in sociocultural context.

2) Trends in Employment of Textile Workers in NC:

  • Nancy Nelson Hodges, PhD - North Carolina textile and apparel industries: implications of current trends for employment and education.

3) Nutrition Intervention and Health:

  • Lynda Brown, PhD - Effects of aging and gonadal hormones on central leptin sensitivity in rats;
  • Lauren Haldeman, PhD - Development of intervention addressing diet and mental health of food insecure Latina immigrants;
  • Debbie Kipp, PhD - Effects of prolactin on age-related bone loss;
  • George Loo, PhD - Molecular effects of phytochemicals in killing cancer cells;
  • Cheryl Lovelady, PhD - Effects of exercise training and dietary intake during lactation on maternal bone status;
  • Michael McIntosh, PhD - Antiobesity mechanism of trans-10, CIS-12 conjugated linoleic acid in human adipocytes;
  • Ron Morrison, PhD - Regulation of hyperplastic obesity through targeted protein degradation.
