2) Erikson, Mechanisms of Manganese Toxicity, NIH, $209,250
Manganese is an essential nutrient, but high concentrations of manganese in the brain have been linked to symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease. Some prior research suggests oxidative stress as a factor in both manganism and Parkinson's. This study will examine whether manganese exposure is connected to oxidative stress in the brain through alterations in the metabolism of glutahione (GSH), an antioxidant. This research will yield insights into mechanisms of neurodegenerative processes.
