Undergraduate programs offered within the School prepare students for professional careers in the various fields of the human sciences. Our majors, located within the five departments of the School, are unique in their ability to help students utilize basic principles from many disciplines to solve human problems and to meet social needs. Through its academic programs, the School of Human Environmental Sciences achieves national recognition. The research programs conducted by HES faculty are widely recognized for their sound science base and innovative qualities. These strong research efforts serve to enhance teaching and support highly challenging and respected undergraduate and graduate programs.

The School of Human Environmental Sciences offers the Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degrees. Descriptions of the undergraduate programs in each of HES’ five departments are provided below:

The Department of Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies

Contact: Ann Ramsey

Undergraduate students may earn the BS degree in Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies. Two concentrations are offered:

  1. Retailing and Consumer Studies;
  2. Apparel Product Design.
  3. Global, Apparel, and Related Industries.

These concentrations prepare students for positions with companies that focus on the process of concept to consumer for apparel and consumer-related products. Graduates may take positions in product design, product development, fashion trend forecasting and analysis, quality control, sourcing, merchandising, buying and retail management.

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies

Contact: Melinda Wolf-Forster

Students are offered the choice of four undergraduate concentrations leading to the BS degree:

  1. Early Child Care and Education. Prepares students for careers in child care centers and agencies, private kindergartens, and hospitals;
  2. Teacher Licensure in Birth through Kindergarten Education;
  3. Child and Adolescent Development in the Family. Prepares students for careers in community agencies that serve children, adolescents, and their families;
  4. Family Studies. Prepares students for family-related careers in business, industry, and governmental and community service agencies.

The Department of Interior Architecture

Contact: Patty Rowland

Undergraduate students earn a BS in Interior Architecture in a program structured around a continuing sequence of studio courses that help the student master the processes of designing interior spaces and products.

Enrollment in the Interior Architecture program is limited. Students are admitted on evidence of scholarly and design potential, motivation, and self-direction. A personal interview or group orientation is required. Students may not enroll in interior architecture courses without formal admission to the Interior Architecture program or written permission of the instructor.

The Department of Nutrition

Contact: Lauren Haldeman

Undergraduate students earn the BS in Nutrition by means of course instruction, research experience, and fieldwork opportunities. Three concentrations are offered:

  1. Human Nutrition and Dietetics (Didactic Program in Dietetics, meeting the academic requirements of the American Dietetic Association). Prepares students for careers in dietetics and nutrition and/or as specialists in nutrition education or sports nutrition;
  2. Nutrition Science. Prepares students for entry into medical, dental, chiropractic or graduate school as well as for careers in research in the biomedical and biotechnical industries;
  3. Nutrition and Wellness. Prepares students for work in a variety of settings such as community health organizations, education, health care, and the fitness industry; also prepares students for graduate training in nutrition, public health education, and exercise and sport science.

The Department of Social Work

Contact: Melissa Taylor

Undergraduate students earn the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree upon satisfactory completion of their program. The purpose of the program is to prepare students for entry level generalist practice in social work. Students who intend to become licensed for school social work must complete the program that has been developed between SWK and the School of Education

Admission to the University does not constitute acceptance to the Social Work department. Admission to the SWK program is competitive and limited. Students who wish to formally declare Social Work as a major should consult with the Undergraduate Program Director, Melissa Taylor. Among requirements for admission to the major are the completion and submission of the BSW Application Packet by May 1 of the year in which the student is seeking admission
