UNCG to Cut Energy Bill, Emissions and Water Usage by Millions

By Rebecca A. Watson, Connections

A savings of nearly $8 million over the next 12 years is what UNCG expects to save on utility bills. Through a new energy service company contract with Trane Comfort Solutions Inc., UNCG will receive energy-related renovations for five campus buildings; the resulting savings from reduced energy consumption will pay for the upgrades.

UNCG is the first campus in the UNC System to try "performance contracting," a process approved for state-owned buildings in 2003. The bulk of changes will involve heating-ventilation-air conditioning and electrical; this will reduce emissions used to generate UNCG's electricity and heat by over 5,000 tons per year and save over four million gallons of water annually. Other efforts are in the works to reduce utility costs further, including simple fixes such as turning off lights in unused rooms-estimates say "lighting" accounts for a whopping one-third of total utility bills.
