The Girls in Sport Symposium is a collaborative effort between the Department of Kinesiology and the Center for Women's Health and Wellness to promote physical activity and sport for girls. We ask, do you believe that it is feminine for girls to be muscular, strong and powerful? If you are not sure, come to next year's Girls In Sport symposium. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro successfully held the 1st Annual Girls in Sport Symposium on February 20, 2009.
The symposium was the brainchild of Dr. Donna Duffy, Kinesiology Visiting Lecturer and former CWHW graduate assistant. The symposium sought to enhance the ability of teachers, coaches, and community leaders who teach and coach girls and young women in order to promote positive physical, emotional, social, and academic development. Keynote speaker, Dr. Moreen Weiss, Director of the Tucker Center for Girls and Women in the Sport, started off the day that also included panel discussions with coaches and athletes.
Plans for the 2nd Annual Girls in Sport Symposium are underway. Next year's keynote speaker will be Dr. Jan Todd from the University of Texas. Dr. Todd will examine the role that the medical and exercise science community played in perpetuating the widespread belief that strength and muscularity are somehow incompatible with womanhood.
