New Mother's Nursing Room

NURSING MOTHER'S ROOM NOW AVAILABLE!

University Libraries and the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness are proud to host the first Nursing Mother's Room at UNCG, where women can pump and/or breastfeed their children! This is the first step in a larger effort to improve the campus climate and support for breastfeeding mothers. If you are interested in being part of this effort please contact Paige Hall Smith, Director of the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness at phsmith@uncg.edu or 334-4736.

Location: Jackson Library Room 570

The following are questions and answers that you may have about using the room:

Q: Is there an orientation session?

A: We ask that first-time users please contact the Center for Women's Health and Wellness (telephone: 336.334.4736 or email: cwhw@uncg.edu) so that we can provide you with an overview and give you a chance to ask questions if they are not addressed here.

Q: Who can use the room?

A: The room is available to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Q: Is the room secure?

A: The room is kept locked at all times and is only accessible by key. The key can be checked out at the library circulation desk.

Q: When is the room open?

A: The room is available during library operating hours.

Q: Does the room have a pump?

A: Yes, the room is equipped with a hospital grade Medela Symphony pump and a gliding rocker and ottoman. Women are welcome to bring their own “pump parts” to attach to the Medela Symphony or bring their own pump.

Q: Must I reserve the room?

A: Currently, there is no room reservation system. Room use is first come, first served.

Q: Is there a time limit?

A: Yes, we request that you limit your visit to 40 minutes. After 40 minutes, you may hear a knock on the door from another mother who needs to use the room.

Q: Is there a sink in the room?

A: There is no sink in the room but the room is located near the women's restroom.

Q: What should I bring with me?

A: We suggest that you bring the following:

  • Purchase a Medela Symphony kit if you plan to use the room pump. Here is a list of on-line stores and local businesses that carry Medela products (PDF)
  • There is no refrigerator available for you to store your breast milk. Please bring an insulated lunch bag with ice or frozen gel packs to store your milk.
  • Bring a wrap or small blanket to keep warm while pumping or breastfeeding.
  • Bring something relaxing to help with let-down - for example, a picture of your baby, a fund book to read, etc.
  • Some moms use a "hands-free" pumping bra to hold containers in place while they read or work on a computer.

Q: Where can I find lactation consultants and/or support groups in the Greensboro area?

A: Lactation Consultants are located at Women’s Hospital of Greensboro: (336) 832-6860

  • They can answer questions about how often/when to pump, transitioning back to work, and other breastfeeding concerns.
  • Phone consultations are free of charge.  Leave a message and include your telephone number. They will call you back.
