Alight Initiative for Breast Cancer Survivorship

The Alight Initiative was founded in the center with a gift from a breast cancer survivor to both understand and address women´s emotional and physical needs as they navigate the health care system. Our goal is to improve the health and quality of life of breast cancer survivors through research, education and patient care.

The initiative´s core strategy is the creation of a new program (the Alight Program) in the community to provide, emotional and instrumental support and information to breast cancer patients to help them and their families make informed decisions about breast cancer treatment and recovery. We are collaborating on this project with different community and health agencies, including the Moses Cone Health Center Regional Cancer Center, and the Breast Center of Greensboro. The Alight Program will be housed in Professional Medical Center building using space provided in-kind by Brown Investment Properties. The Alight Program will include: (a) a private living room to serve as a sanctuary where newly diagnosed patients and their families can find the solitude and support necessary to confront and process their grief; and (b) a resource library that contains books, articles, videos and computers with internet access to women can access the latest information.

We are currently conducting focus group interviews with breast cancer survivors to learn more about their needs; what we learn from these women will help us in developing our program. We are also conducting an assessment of the resources in Greensboro which are available to help meet the needs of women with breast cancer. For more information about this study click here.
