Current Research: NC-NARAL's Plan B Campaign

A 2007 survey conducted by NC-NARAL found that 40% of North Carolina's pharmacies do not stock the emergency contraception, Plan B (click here to go to NC-NARAL report ). With this information in hand, NC-NARAL chose to conduct Plan B awareness campaign, specifically around one local pharmacy that does not stock Plan B to try and raise women's awareness and knowledge about the emergency contraceptive. The Center for Women's Health and Wellness was asked to evaluate data collected by NC-NARAL's campaign to increase women's knowledge and access to Plan B through pharmacies.

NC-NARAL contracted with a survey research firm to conduct telephone interviews with women registered voters living in a 4 zip code area both before and after the campaign. At baseline, of the 4285 women on the initial voter registration call list, 304 surveys were completed. Two-thirds of these women received the intervention while one-third did not. All 304 women were re-contacted after the campaign: 107 were interviewed. The campaign intervention consisted of two mailers plus a phone call by NC-NARAL volunteers.

Campaign Results that were signficant:

  • Overall, increased the number of women who had heard of Plan B
  • Among those who thought abortion should be legal:
    • Significantly more women who received the intervention materials, had heard of Plan B after the intervention
    • Ninety-five percent of those who received the intervention knew that Plan B was not a regular form of birth control compared to 60% of those who did not receive the intervention.
  • Among those who thought aboration should be illegal:
    • Those who were exposed to the intervention were more likely to be aware of Plan B than those who were not exposed to the intervention

Campaign Results that were not significant, but results were positive:

  • 31% of the women who received the intervention compared to 5.4% of those who did not, recalled receiving information  on Plan B in the mail
  • 43.8% of the women who recevied the intervention compared to 15.8% of those who did not were aware that a local pharmacy was not stocking it
  • 46.9% of the women who received the intervention compared to 15.8% of those who did not recalled receiving a phone call about Plan B
  • 68% of the women who received the intervention compared to 38.9% of those who did not believe that Plan B will prevent pregnancy
  • 62% of the women who did receive the intervention compared to 44% of those who did not believe that Plan B will not work if you are already pregnant
  • 75% of the women who did receive the intervention compared to 50% of those who did not believe that women under the age of 18 need a prescription
