The number of children being home schooled has increased dramatically in the past decade. For the 1993-4 academic year in North Carolina 8,927 children were home schooled in 5,415 home schools. By the 2003-4 academic year these numbers had risen to 54,501 students in 28,746 schools.
There has been virtually no research on the physical activity levels of students of home schooled children. In a similar vein there has been no research on the physical activity levels of parents, mostly mothers who home school their children.
With funding from the Center for Women´s Health and Wellness, Dr. Tammy Schilling, is seeking to understand the factors that influence the physical activity levels of home school families and evaluate a university-based intervention for both the children and the mothers.
