Books to Borrow

Bender, T. (2003). Discussion-Based Online Teaching To Enhance Student Learning. Sterling, VA: Stylus.
One of the best parts of this book is the section on simulations.

Collison, G., Elbaum, B., Haavind, S., and Tinker, R. (2000). Facilitating Online Learning: Effective Strategies for Moderators. Madison, WI: Atwood Publishing.

Hanna, D.E., Glowacki-Dudka, M. and Conceicao-Runlee, S. (2000). 147 Practical Tips for Teaching Online Groups: Essentials of Web-Based Education. Madison, WI: Atwood Publishing.

Ko, S. and Rossen, S. (2004). Teaching Online: A Practical Guide. 2nd ed. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company.
This is an excellent reference book. It is formatted so that it is easy to dip in and out of.

Morgan, C. and O'Reilly, M. (1999). Assessing Open and Distance Learners. London: Kogan Page Limited and Sterling, VA: Stylus.
Parts A and B are an excellent review of assessment issues in general as well as effective practice in the online environment. Part C consists of examples, which, disappointingly, use very little technology.

Palloff, R.M. and Pratt, K. (1999). Building Learning Communities in Cyberspace: Effective Strategies for the Online Classroom. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
This was among the first books on the subject and remains an excellent entree into the world of effective online teaching.

Palloff, R.M. and Pratt, K. (2003). The Virtual Student: A Profile and Guide to Working with Online Learners. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.

Salmon, G. (2004). E-moderating: The Key to Teaching and Learning Online. 2nd edition.
See the E-moderating website for useful information.

Salmon, G. (2002). E-tivities: The Key to Active Online Learning. London: RoutledgeFalmer.
See the E-tivities website for useful information.

See Gilly Salmon's website All Things in Moderation.

White, K.W., Weight, B.H. eds. The Online Teaching Guide: A Handbook of Attitudes, Strategies, and Techniques for the Virtual Classroom. (2000). Boston: Allyn and Bacon.
This book consists of a series of essays by University of Phoenix faculty. One of the best things about this book are the sections that deal with time management.
