The Class Of 1958/Gail Hennis Scholarship

Eligibility
  • Entering student who graduated from Alexander Central High School , Taylorsville , North Carolina .
  • Other students in the School of Health and Human Performance considered if none available from Alexander Central High School .
  • Academic performance primary consideration, need secondary.
  • Renewable through undergraduate career.

Usual size of award: $1,000.

Unique Requirements

If there is no suitable candidate from Alexander Central High School , the scholarship may be awarded to another entering or current student majoring in an academic program in the School of Health and Human Performance.

History

The Class of 1958/Gail Hennis Scholarship was created on behalf of the Class of 1958 through the Carson Family Scholarship Fund by Mary Miller (Bobbi) Carson in honor of Dr. Gail Hennis, Class Advisor. The scholarship is established in recognition of the academic challenge and human concern she willingly gave to her students.

Bobbi Carson

A native of Taylorsville , NC , Ms. Carson had a career in athletics and physical education at the collegiate level. Her teaching career included positions at Bradford Junior College , The Pennsylvania State University, Wellesley College , Northeastern University , and Boston College . She retired in 1996, following 26 years at Boston College where she served as Associate Director, Athletics.

Dr. Gail Hennis

A native of Indiana , Dr. Gail M. Hennis served as a member of the UNCG faculty from 1950-1986, and as Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Assistant Dean of the Graduate School during the 1976-1986. She also served as Interim Dean of the Graduate School during the 1984-1985 academic year. She received her undergraduate degree from Purdue University and both the MA and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa . In addition to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Dr. Hennis advised many masters and doctor degree candidates who assumed prominent positions in colleges and universities throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries. Among her many honors are included the M. Gladys Scott Honor Award (University of Iowa) and the Distinguished Alumni Award awarded to her by the UNCG School of Health and Human Performance after bestowing on her the distinction of "honorary alumna." Dr. Hennis passed away in December of 2002.
