The Cheney Scholarship In Dance Choreography

Eligibility
  • Entering or continuing full time students majoring in dance with special talent for choreography within contemporary dance.
  • Talented as measured by an audition given by the Dance Department.
  • Minimum of 3.2 GPA.
  • Financial need may be considered.
  • Renewable through senior year.

History

Dr. Gay Cheney and her mother, Winifred Cheney, established the Cheney Scholarship in Dance in 2003.

Dr. Cheney

A native of New Jersey , Dr. Cheney served as a member of the faculty in the School of Health and Human Performance from 1978-1996. She was Professor and Head of the Dance Department from 1978-1982. While at UNCG, Dr. Cheney taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with her major areas of teaching responsibility improvisation, the creative process, choreography, philosophy of dance, 20 th century dance and art as human experience. Her textbook, Basic Concepts in Modern Dance: A Creative Approach, first published in 1969, is the adopted text for use in the dance curriculum of the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction. In 1995, Dr. Cheney was honored by her colleagues in dance with the North Carolina Dance Alliance annual award. The School of Health and Human Performance named her an honorary alumna and presented her with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998.
