History

Initial gifts to establish this scholarship came from individuals, proceeds of fund-raising events by members of the UNC-G recreation Society and from membership dues within the Society.

Dorothy Davis

Dorothy Davis was a member of the Department of Physical Education (now the Department of Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science)) from 1930-1971. She held an undergraduate degree in Art from the Western College, Ohio, and a M.A. (1930) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While at UNCG (formally the Woman's College) she taught dance, tennis and social recreation and was an advisor in the Office of Academic Advising on campus. She was a key figure in the development, with Sociology, of the interdepartmental major in Recreation which led to the Leisure Studies curriculum in the School. Miss Davis also was instrumental in the development of national championships in Women's Tennis. She was the Director of the National Collegiate Tennis Championships during 1964 and 1965 in the first two years of the tournament –both years at UNCG.
