The Ellen Griffin "Spirit" Award In Women´s Golf
Eligibility- Rising sophomore, junior or senior in the School of Health and Human Performance.
- Full academic load.
- Minimum GPA 3.0.
- Dedicated to becoming an outstanding professional with potential to enhance positively the lives of others through his/her life's work.
- Generous, pugnacious, outspoken, honest, fun loving imaginative, creative – all personal qualities of Ellen Griffin.
Usual size of award: $1,000
Unique RequirementsRecipient preference will be given in the following order:
- Women's golf team member who is an ESS student in the Physical Education Teacher Education certification program.
- Women's golf team member who is an ESS student enrolled in any program.
- Women's golf team member who is enrolled in any HHP program.
- Any student, male or female, enrolled in ESS in any of the programs.
- Any student, male or female, enrolled in any HHP program.
The Ellen Griffin Endowed Scholarship in Women's Golf was established with a gift from Suzanne E. Rice, Class of 1963 to honor the memory of her mentor, Ellen Griffin.
Ellen GriffinEllen Jean Griffin graduated from Woman's College (now UNCG) in 1940 with a degree in Physical Education, then immediately joined the faculty of the same department. She taught at the University until 1968, and later at her own golf teaching facility, The Farm. In 1962 she was the ladies Professional Golf Association's unanimous selection as national "Teacher of the Year." She received UNCG's Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1980. She was an author, an innovator, a master teacher of golf, and a powerful, inspiring influence on hundreds of students, colleagues and friends. Her loves were golf and teaching. She once said, "Through the years, any contribution I have made has been through the only think I know I can do, and that is through teaching – being in a position to help others do something they want to do better." Ellen Griffin died in 1986.
