History

The John and Mary Louis Burns' memorial scholarship was established in 1995 to celebrate Mrs. Burns' strong roots in Guilford County and the couple's lifelong love of the performing arts. This scholarship was established by members of their family and designed to benefit students with an interest in preparing for careers in dance and musical theatre.

Dr. John T and Mary Louis Lowe Burns

Mary Louse Lowe Burns was born and reared near Pleasant Garden. She was a professional dancer. Her husband to be, John T. Burns, was also a dancer, and the two formed a professional dance team that toured much of the world. Together they comprised an innovative creative team for many years and maintained a strong interest in dance and theatre long after they had stopped performing. John T. Burns became a doctor, returning to California, his native state, to earn his M.D. Eventually he and his wife returned to North Carolina where they remained for the rest of their lives. Mrs. Burns past away in January of 1991 and Dr. Burns three months later.
