The Nancy Burton Hockett Scholarship

Purpose of Award

To honor and support a School of Health and Human Performance student for excellence in scholarship and involvement in School, University, or community extracurricular activities.

Eligibility

  • Current undergraduate, carry a full academic load and be enrolled in one of the departments in the School of Health and Human Performance.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0.
  • Demonstrated involvement in extracurricular and/or service activities (emphasis on teaching physical education, coaching sports, or work with the YWCA/YMCA, camping, parks and recreation).
  • Financial need may be considered.

Usual Size of Award: $500

Unique Requirements

May be renewed through the senior year, as long as recipient maintains a GPA of 3.0 and continues to demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities.

History

This scholarship was established in 2006 by Nancy Burton Hockett, who graduated from the Woman’s College, Cum Laude with a BS in Physical Education in 1951.

Nancy Burton Hockett

Nancy Burton Hockett was born in Greensboro, NC, July 15 1929. She attended Greensboro Senior High School where she was President of both the national Honor Society and the Girl’s Athletic Association, and the recipient of the Citizenship trophy. Throughout her life, Nancy pursued her love of sports and the outdoors by participating in many sports and summer camp counseling. Nancy had a deep love of tennis. In 1946 she was the NC Jr. Girls Champion in singles and doubles and starting in 1972 she began a very active participation in tennis officiating, US Open, Wightman Cup, Davis Cup, to mention a few. In 2004 she officiated at the ITF International Senior Championships in Philadelphia. Nancy, along with her husband Howard, enjoy playing football, water skiing camping and fishing with their four grand children.
