The Phoebe Pegram – Phoebe Baughan Barr Scholarship In Dance

History

The Phoebe Pegram – Phoebe Baughan Barr Scholarship in Dance was established in 2002 by a bequest from Dr. Ernest Scott Barr and a contribution from Dr. Eleanor T. Hopper. This scholarship is in honor and memory of Phoebe Pegram Baughan, a member of the Class of 1892, then the State Normal and Industrial School , and her daughter, Phoebe Baughan Barr, Class of 1927, then the North Carolina College for Women.

"Miss Phoebe," as she was known to many, was born in Elkin , NC in 1871 and at the age of 25 – with only five days of public schooling - was one of the first students at UNCG, than the State Normal and Industrial School . She remained at the school for six years before taking a teaching position in Gastonia , three years prior to her marriage to H. H. Baughan, a public works engineer. While a student she studied physical culture and by her fourth year she was teaching full time in the field. Most prized among her possessions was a medal presented to her in 1897 to recognize her progress while at college – the Peabody medal for being the "most deserving student."

Her daughter Phoebe, Class of 1927, was a distinguished dancer and teacher of dance. She was a student in the Denishawn School of Dance and Related Arts in New York and for four years danced professionally, touring with the Denishawn Dance Company. In 1931 Phoebe married Scott Barr, a promising university professor, and thereafter began a dance teaching career that spanned three states and more than four decades, and left a legacy of highly trained dancers throughout the Southeast, many of whom joined professional dance companies.
