Each year, excellent students, majoring in a Department in the School of Health and Human Performance are awarded approximately $80,000 in scholarships and awards. Below is a list of these awards and qualifying characteristics for each.

Students may apply with a GPAs of less than 3.00, but should include a letter from their research mentor detailing compelling reasons why the applicant should be

Research Awards: call for applications announced each Fall

The Dr. Ron G. Morrow Graduate Fellowship
  • Entering or continuing graduate students studying in one of the departments of the School of Health and Human Performance.
  • Outstanding academic qualifications.
  • Intention to conduct research in the area of diversity, specifically issues related to sexual orientation (i.e., homophobia, heterosexism, safe/hate-free environments, pedagogical strategies) and/or women's health and wellness.
  • Preference to North Carolina residents (all things being equal in the final evaluation).
  • Financial need may be considered.
  • Renewable: two years for masters student, three years for doctoral student.
The Loretta M. Williams Undergraduate CWHW Research Fund
  • Undergraduate students from any department in the School of Health and Human Performance who plan to conduct a research project focusing on some aspect of women's health and wellness.
The School of Health and Human Performance Undergraduate Research Fund
  • Junior or senior enrolled in any department in the School of Health and Human Performance.
  • Recommended minimum GPA of 3.00. (For students with GPAs less than 3.00 their application should be accompanied with a letter from their research advisor detailing strong and compelling reasons why they should be considered.)
The Theodore & Loretta Williams Research Fund for Arts Health
  • Graduate student from any department in the School of Health and Human Performance who plans to conduct a research project focusing on some aspect of arts health.
  • Undergraduate student, if a special case presents itself.
The Sadye Dunn Doxie Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Award
  • Current juniors or seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.00* from any department in the school.

THE SCHOOL OF HEALTH AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE

The Dean's Student Advisory Council Scholarship
  • The Dean’s Student Advisory Council Scholarship was established by donations from the students of the School of HHP. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize and support a fellow HHP student who has overcome challenging circumstances in order to attend UNCG.
The Nancy Burton Hockett Scholarship*
  • Current undergraduate, carry a full academic load and be enrolled in one of the departments in the School of Health and Human Performance.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0.
  • Demonstrated involvement in extracurricular and/or service activities (emphasis on teaching physical education, coaching sports, or work with the YWCA/YMCA, camping, parks and recreation).
  • Financial need may be considered.
  • This award is renewable. Check with the Office of the Dean to determine availability.

The Marge Leonard Scholarship*
  • Rising sophomore, junior or senior enrolled as a full time student in one of the departments of the School of Health and Human Performance.
  • In academic good standing.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in department, community, and/or youth activity programs (e.g., after school, camp, community centers).
  • Be in a program that focuses on developing teaching and interpersonal skills to be used in educational settings serving all ages.
  • Financial need may be considered.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION SCIENCES AND DISORDERS

The Cheshire Center Award Fund for Communication Sciences and Disorders
  • Admitted to the Communication Sciences and Disorders graduate program in speech-language pathology
  • Enrolled for full time study at the Master's level.
  • Primary criterion for selection is academic accomplishment.
  • Financial need may be taken into consideration.
The CSD Susan Stout Undergraduate Scholarship
  • Rising senior in CSD, minimum 75 credits.
  • Full time student for past two semesters.
  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA.
  • Strong leadership and service.
The University Speech and Hearing Scholarship
  • Rising junior or senior student majoring in speech pathology and audiology.
  • Academic merit, character and leadership.
  • Financial need may be considered.
The Quota Club
  • Currently enrolled full-time student in speech pathology and audiology.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Demonstrated strong character and involvement in community service.
  • Financial need may be considered.

The Chauns Dance Scholarship*
  • Entering full-time students majoring in dance
  • Financial need (file a FAFSA)
  • Renewable for up to three years

The Cheney Scholarship in Dance Choreography*
  • Entering or continuing full time students majoring in dance with special talent for choreography within contemporary dance.
  • Talented as measured by an audition given by the Dance Department.
  • Minimum of 3.2 GPA.
  • Financial need may be considered.
  • Renewable through senior year.

The Dr. John T. and Mary Louise Lowe Burns Scholarship
  • Undergraduate students interested in careers in dance and musical theatre.
  • Merit or financial need can be the primary consideration.
The Kimberly Renee Goodman Scholarship
  • Student majoring in dance.
  • Financial need (file a FAFSA).
  • Integrity and high moral character.
  • Preference to students from North Carolina , and Iredell County , in particular.
The Melanie Feinstein Memorial Scholarship
  • Graduate or undergraduate student majoring in Dance.
  • Commitment to using dance in a context of human liberation and social justice and whose presence will increase the racial diversity of the department.
  • Financial need (file a FAFSA).
The Phoebe Pegram – Phoebe Baughan Barr Scholarship in Dance*
  • Entering or continuing full time students majoring in dance.
  • Talented as measured by an audition given by the Dance Department.
  • Minimum of 3.2 GPA.
  • Financial need may be considered.
  • Renewable through senior year.

The Virginia Moomaw Scholarship
  • Rising junior or senior majoring in dance.

The Class of 1958/Gail Hennis Scholarship(2)
  • There are 2 awards:
    • Entering student in the School of Health and Human Performance who graduated from Alexander Central High School, Taylorsville, North Carolina.
    • Full time undergraduate student in Kinesiology (preference given to Alexander Central High School graduate).
  • Other students in the School of Health and Human Performance considered if none available from Alexander Central High School.
  • Academic performance primary consideration, need secondary.
  • Renewable through undergraduate career.
The Betsy Umstead Undergraduate Scholarship*
  • Full time rising junior or senior Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science) major.
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA.
  • Strong leadership through extracurricular and/or community involvement.
  • Preference to students from North Carolina who plan to teach, and those with financial need.

The ESS Doctoral Dissertation Completion Award
  • To provide financial support to a doctoral student in the Department of KIN while completing their dissertation.
  • Awardees must have an approved dissertation project.
The Ellen Griffin "Spirit" Award in Women's Golf
  • Rising sophomore, junior or senior in the School of Health and Human Performance.
  • Full academic load.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0.
  • Dedicated to becoming an outstanding professional with potential to enhance positively the lives of others through his/her life's work.
  • Generous, pugnacious, outspoken, honest, fun loving imaginative, creative – all personal qualities of Ellen Griffin.
The Kate R. Barrett Student Professional Development Fund
  • This fund provides support for a graduate student to experience cutting edge professional development.
The Mary Channing Coleman Award Senior candidate for graduation in the Department of Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science).

The Priscilla Mullen Gowen Scholarship
  • Undergraduate student in the Department of Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science)..
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA.
  • Leadership skills or potential.
  • Active with extracurricular activities on campus.
The Kinesiology (formerly ESS) Susan Stout Undergraduate Scholarships (2)
  • Rising senior in Kinesiology (formerly ESS), minimum 75 credits.
  • Full time student for past two semesters.
  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA.
  • Strong leadership and service.
The June P. Galloway Scholarship
  • Rising junior or senior enrolled in the teacher education sequence in the Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science).
  • Minimum of 2.5 GPA.
  • Teaching potential and need major factors in selection.
The Rosemary McGee Scholarship
  • Full time rising sophomore, junior or senior in the School of Health and Human Performance, preference to a student in Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science).
  • Minimum of 3.65 GPA.
  • Leadership, community service and financial need secondary considerations.
  • Renewable through senior year.

The Susan Stout Graduate Fellowship
  • Entering graduate students in the Department of Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science).
  • Academic excellence.
The Susan Stout Graduate Research Fellowships
  • Graduate students in good academic standing enrolled in a masters or doctoral program in Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science) and conducting independent research projects for credit or non-credit or for masters projects, theses and doctoral dissertations.
  • If admitted under provisional status, conditions of admission must be satisfied.
  • Contact the Director of Graduate Study in Kinesiology for details and application calendar.
The P. E. Class of ´75/Hielscher Teaching Scholarship
  • Rising, full time senior student majoring in Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Science), teacher education concentration. who plans to teach,
  • Preference to students with minimum of 3.0 GPA.
Physical Education Class of 1959/Rosemary McGee Scholarship in Sports Medicine
  • Rising, full time senior majoring in sports medicine.

  • Undergraduate or graduate student in Public Health Education having completed at least two semesters of full time study while enrolled in the Department of Public Health Education.
  • Alumni having completed program within past two years.
  • Minimum of 3.2 GPA.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and commitment to continued professional learning.
The Nell A. Stallings Graduate Fellowship
  • Incoming graduate student currently making application to study in the Department of Public Health Education.
  • Outstanding academic qualifications (GRE, GPA).
  • Recommended by their department head (or designee).
  • Recent participation in extracurricular activities that support and extend their area of major interest.
The PHE Susan Stout Undergraduate Scholarship
  • Rising senior in PHE minimum 75 credits.
  • Full time student for past two semesters.
  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA.
  • Strong leadership and service.

The Avren Scholarship
  • Current undergraduate student majoring in Recreation, Tourism, & Hospitality Management.
  • Be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours of study.
  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA.
The Dorothy Davis Scholarship
  • Junior majoring in Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Management.
  • Full-time student for at least two semesters in the major (minimum 12 hours/semester).
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA.
  • Strong professional and personal leadership qualities.
The RTH Susan Stout Undergraduate Scholarship
  • Rising senior in RTH minimum 75 credits.
  • Full time student for past two semesters.
  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA.
