Support Groups

Communication Disorders are not just part of how we talk and listen to each other, but are woven into each facet of our daily lives. Support groups, patient education, community involvement, and an on-staff psychology resident offer our patients treatment for the whole person, not just the symptom.
For additional information on groups, please call (336) 217-5120.

Aphasia Support Group

Aphasia patients and caregivers meet to offer communication opportunities as well as emotional and social support in a relaxed environment. We meet the 2nd Monday of each month at 4:00pm in our office at Gateway University Research Park. All meetings will be professionally supported by S. Crutchley, MA, CCC-SLP.

Mental Health Support

Communication Disorders affect not only communication, but various aspects of a person’s social and emotional well-being. In order to mitigate stressors and promote better patient outcomes, our program has teamed with the UNCG Psychology Department to offer supplemental counseling to current patients. Services are rendered by a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Psychology Program.

Patient Education Center

Knowledge is power. Community education, direct patient education, and student enrichment are all central to our program.

Pre-Surgery Counseling for Laryngectomy

Facing laryngectomy surgery can be an extremely daunting and scary time for patients. Fear of the unknown can lead to feelings of helplessness, depression and anxiety.

Through education about surgery and what to expect throughout recovery, patients become empowered and realize that they can lead productive and enjoyable lives as a laryngectomee. Armed with information, patients may be less likely to experience adverse effects such as depression and improper self-care.
