2012-2013 School of Health and Human Sciences Alumni Awardees:


The School of Health and Human Sciences is proud to announce the recipients of Alumni awards for 2013 ! These awards include the Distinguished Alumni, Lifetime Legacy, Public Service, Emerging Leader, and Pacesetter awards.

Distinguished Alumni Awardee : Gary L. Bowen, Ph.D., ACSW

Gary L. BowenDr. Bowen earned a BS/BSW in Sociology/Social Work in 1975 and Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies in 1981. He is the Kenan Distinguished Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he co-directed the development of the Ph.D. Program in Social Work. Among many other areas of expertise, Dr. Bowen has extensive experience working with all branches of the military services and has visited installations worldwide during the past 30 years consulting with military policymakers, researchers, and practitioners across a range of mental health and social service issues.

Lifetime Legacy Awardee : Nancy J. Adams, M.S., CGC

Gary L. BowenMs. Adams earned a B.S. in Nutrition in 1960 and an M.S. in Biology – Human Genetics/Medical Genetics in 1977. Ms. Adams is credited with bringing the profession of genetic counseling to North Carolina almost 35 years ago. She created her own plan of study and clinical practicum in the field of Human Genetics and went on to become the first genetic counselor in North Carolina. When the UNCG Genetic Counseling Program was created in Fall 2000, Ms. Adams was an integral member of the planning committee. She remains active in the program as a member of the External Advisory Committee and as a clinical supervisor.

Public Service Awardee : Pelagie Quenum, MPH

Pelagie QuenumMs. Quenum earned a B.S in Community Health Education in 2003 and Masters in Public Health in 2005. While a student at UNCG, Ms. Quenum took global public health to the local level by organizing African immigrant and refugee women in the Triad region to take action for their health. In 2007, Ms. Quenum started a non-profit organization, Prime Care International, Inc., where she provides health education along with interpretation assistance to immigrant and refugee newcomers in the Baltimore area. She later extended this work to address the needs of mothers and children in Chad where she created and runs the Schilo Center for Mothers and Children Living with HIV/AIDS.

Emerging Leader Awardee : Oluwatoyosi "Toyosi" A. Adekeye, MBBS, MPH, CPH

Toyosi AdekeyeMr. Adekeye is a 2010 graduate of the Master of Public Health program. He also earned a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Gerontology in 2010. Mr. Adekeye earned a Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery in Nigeria in 2005. He was recently named Program Director of the Community Health Leadership Program at the David Satcher Health Leadership Institute in Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. In this position he worked directly with former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher. He was named a Scholar in the Health Disparities Research Training Program in the Minority Health and Research Center at the University of Alabama. He is currently in the DrPH program at the University of Georgia in Athens.
