The Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) are conducting a research study about the importance of preventing children from becoming overweight - Kids & Adults Now: Defeat Obesity (KAN-DO).
Childhood obesity is a national public health priority. Currently 23% of children aged 2-5 and 31% of children aged 6-19 are overweight or at risk for being overweight. These figures will fuel future increases in adult obesity, which already affects more than 65% of the population aged 20 and older. The need for intervention is evident and is further highlighted by the growing number of physical disorders, including type II diabetes, formerly associated with adult obesity that are increasingly affecting children.
Overweight women who recently delivered a baby and their preschool-age child between 2 and 5 are eligible to participate in this study. This study is being sponsored by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The two research sites for the study will be in the Triangle at the Duke University Medical Center and the Triad at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Truls Ostbye, MD, PhD, FFPH, is the Principle Investigator at DUMC. Cheryl Lovelady, PhD, RD, LDN, FADA, is the Principle Investigator at UNCG.
Participants in the study will be randomly selected to be in one of two groups. One group will receive newsletters about preschool reading skills. The other group will take part in a free program that includes: classes about physical activity, healthy eating, and parenting strategies; eight mailed family kits with health information and child activities; and telephone coaching. Participants will be followed for about two years with yearly visits to each site.
