IARC Builds a Dwelling in 32 Square Feet

Second year Interior Architecture students have been challenged to build a modern dwelling, all within the confines of 32 square feet. In their first trial-by-fire design challenge, aptly called 30+2, two teams of 25 students must submit project designs, plans, models, and marketing for review by their peers and professors. Both structures were unveiled at a reception open to the public on Friday, September 14.

Interior Architecture students are learning to combine design theory and practice to reformulate their definition of interior spaces: what they look like, how they function, how people interact within them, and how they impact the world.

The students have divided roles and responsibilities according to actual job descriptions for a typical construction project -- including project management, budget and scheduling, and construction documentation. Design teams face the real-world challenge of creating a resource-conscious design that minimizes construction waste while being structurally sound, visually compelling, and enjoyable to inhabit. Site locators must guarantee site approval from the University while the prefabrication team begins cutting and assembly in the woodshop at UNCG's Gatewood Studio Arts building.

Piedmont Triad businesses Brooks Building Corporation, Builders First Source, The Dize Company, Floor Covering International, Jacob's Creek Stone Company Inc., Lowe's, RS&H (Reynolds, Smith & Hills), Salem Fastener and Supply, Williams Steel Co., and Wolfe Homes have generously donated materials and funds for the students' project. Students are still seeking material or cash donations for a reception.

Robert Charest, Assistant Professor in the Department of Interior Architecture, feels that "With experiences such as dwelling in 30+2, apprentices transcend design by feeling, smelling, tasting, hearing, and seeing their work in an entirely different way, a participative way which reaches beyond the passive medium of architectural representation."
