GREENSBORO - Jennifer McMasters, a senior at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has won a $10,000 YMA Geoffrey Beene Fashion Scholarship. The prize was announced Jan. 9 at a Manhattan gala attended by fashion luminaries such as Kenneth Cole.
"I enjoyed getting to speak with important individuals in the fashion industry who were sitting at my table," said McMasters, who grew up in Burlington. "This was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget."
Each scholarship applicant submitted a case study on re-inventing the Gap. Eight applicants were selected to come to New York to present their work to the scholarship committee, which also examined the students' resumes and transcripts.
Three other students also won $10,000 scholarships; four students won $25,000 scholarships.
This was the first year for the scholarships underwritten by the Geoffrey Beene Foundation. The YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the fashion industry.
Jennifer is the daughter of Randy and Karen McMasters of Burlington.
