Welcome from Celia Routh Hooper, Dean and Professor of the School of Health and Human Sciences!
Welcome to the exciting UNCG School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS). We are a group of faculty, staff, and students who value outstanding teaching, research, community engagement and service. Through our new strategic plan we describe our mission, vision and values. We are a school that values diversity, including global diversity and provide opportunities for our students to have international experiences with students here and around the world.
Many of our disciplines within HHS have come to be known as health and human sciences professions and some are helping professions. We have students who gain the knowledge and skills to become social workers, dieticians, nutritionists, athletic trainers, kinesiologists, genetic counselors, speech language pathologists, speech and hearing scientists, gerontologists, therapeutic recreation specialists, recreation leaders, child development and family studies specialists, experts in conflict resolution, and experts in many areas of public.
Our dedicated and experienced faculty engage undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in a love of learning, the creation of new knowledge, a spirit of entrepreneurship, and a commitment to our vision of making the world better, safer, healthier, and more humane and just.
I invite you to explore our web sites and learn about our varied research portfolio, as varied as the human condition. For example, you can learn about faculty and students exploring the skills of parenting, the effect of physical activity on cognition, the importance of knee joint laxity in female athletics, the anti-diabetic properties of grape powder, and the genetic predisposition of musicians to hearing loss. See our laboratory work in obesity prevention, virtual reality, voice measurement and more!
You will learn about our scholars working to help the jobless in Greensboro and beyond. You will learn about our collaborations with NC A &T State University and Western Carolina University and universities around the nation and world. You will learn about our student and faculty affiliations with over 800 agencies in Guilford County, North Carolina and beyond. I encourage the reader to visit our departments, housed in six buildings and around the world (for our distance/online programs!).
For our HHS Alumni - whether you were an alumni of Arts and Sciences, Health and Human Performance, Human Environmental Sciences, or the Graduate School - you will now have “dual citizenship,” as I do. Whatever your past alumni affiliation, join me as a fellow alumna or alumnus in becoming part of HHS. Our wonderful staff, faculty and students are doing something bigger altogether.
