Podcast

Build your own podcast

Creating and posting a podcast requires:

  • An audio or video file in a format viewable on the web.
  • A place to put your files.
  • A file that enables users to subscribe – the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) file.
  • A way for users to subscribe.

What you need:

  1. Software/hardware for creation.
  2. Web space to host your podcasts and the file that enables subscription.

Steps

UNCG-hosted

Other web space such as a blog

Create podcast(s). Create podcast.
Upload/post podcast to UNCG web space. Upload or put the URL to your podcast in a blog entry.
Use Poderator to create RSS file and place RSS file in same UNCG web space directory as the podcast(s). Viewers who subscribe to your blog will be notified about new entries.*
Copy URL of RSS file into Feedburner to create subscription URL so viewers can subscribe via their preferred reader.
Post the resulting URL on a web page or send to users to use to subscribe in a reader such as Google Reader or iTunes.

* If your podcasts are attached to Google Blogger and your viewers wish to subscribe via Google Reader, they should copy the subscription URL from the blog (see bottom of the blog page) and add ?alt=rss to the end of the URL before entering it in Google Reader.

Create Podcast

Audio

  • Audacity is a popular free software for creating audio podcasts and is approved for use on UNCG computers.
See Audacity Overview and Download Audacity handouts.
  • Use a headset for recording. HHP has a small number of Logitech headsets to lend.
Recommendation: export your recording as an mp3, a file format that is well-supported on the Internet and on mobile devices.

Video

  • If you wish to do a narrated capture of movements on your screen, Jing Project is a good free option. Camtasia (though not free) is another option.
Note: Jing Project is not approved for use on UNCG computers.
Note: Jing outputs Flash. See your HHS ITC for help.
  • Your HHS ITCs have Adobe Captive, another software option. They can also help you capture, handle, and convert video in a variety of formats.

Upload/post podcast

  • For setting up podcasts in UNCG web space, please see your HHS ITC.
  • For creating a blog that can serve as a hosting and/or subscription vehicle, see the description of a few blog tools.

Create RSS File using Poderator

(not required if using the subscription service of a blog tool)
  • Create your podcast(s) and post to a web space.
  • Create a free account on Poderator.
  • Add a new show. This form is for the whole podcast series. Fill out the fields and then Poderator will remember the code and can add new code for any additional podcast episodes you add using Poderator.
  • Create a new episode. (What you are doing is adding the code for a new podcast episode to the XML feed (RSS) so that subscribers will be alerted to it.)
  • Publish your XML feed (RSS).
  • Post this file in the same folder as your podcasts in your webspace.

Use Feedburner to create URL for subscription

  • Go to Feedburner.
Note: Feedburner is now owned by Google. You must have a Google account in order to use it.
  • Enter the URL of your XML (RSS file).
  • Post the resulting URL to your website and/or send it to your viewers. They can enter it into a service such as Google Reader or iTunes and be automatically updated when a new podcast episode is posted.

Adding a new podcast episode

  • Create the podcast and post to the web space.
  • Go to Poderator and create a new episode.
  • Take the resulting XML (RSS) file and post to your web space, replacing the one there. This will update the subscription service so that it includes your latest podcast episode.
