Blogging provides an opportunity for students to practice writing and expressing their views. Students who comment or review blog entries can practice their critical thinking skills as well.
Use of the blog tool in Blackboard avoids FERPA issues. However, it also prevents reviewing or comments from the web public, some of whom may be experts on the topics being discussed. Some instructors value this for their students. Use of public tools such as Blogger and Wordpress may raise FERPA issues. Instructors using these public tools are advised to keep this in mind.
Instructors can use blogging to update students on course or other discipline-related information or events. Some instructors use the Blackboard blog tool for their course announcements and set their course entry page to the blog.
