Current Research Projects

    • Motherhood and coaching: balancing multiple roles.
This study will investigate how coaches who are mothers and coaches who are not mothers balance their multiple roles while they are “in season." Data collection will be complete by the end of the spring of 2011.
      • The investigator on this study is Dr. Donna Duffy, UNCG.
    • Coaching Coaches: A educational program to increase the positive role that high school coaches play in stopping gender-based interpersonal violence.
The goal of this project is to develop a partnership between the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NCCASA), the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) and UNC Greensboro (UNCG) that, in the short-term, develops an educational program for high school coaches in North Carolina that effectively increases the positive role that these coaches play in stopping gender-based interpersonal violence among their athletes. Our long-term goal is to develop a strong partnership between these organizations that forms the foundation for a future collaborative action, research and grant funding that further: enhances the leadership role that coaches and athletes can play in reducing gender- based violence; exposes, examines, and reduces the tolerance of gender-based violence by the athletic community; and reduces gender-based violence perpetration by athletes.

    • How does individual team role and status impact the bystander intentions of student-athletes in sexually violent situations?
A dominant issue in literature on sexual violence and bystander behavior is a need to understand how individual role impacts bystander behavior for student-athletes in sexually violent situations. Currently there is no scale or tool to help capture this domain. Eight hypothetical situations were created to assess these factors in regards to likelihood of intervening or coming forward in sexually violent situations. Each situation interchanged between high/low status of sport as well as high/low role of the person in the scenario. These situations were given to 48 incoming freshman, Division I, student- athletes to assess thier perception of intervening in response to the 8 different scenarios. We are in the process of analyzing the data and hope to present this study at the 2013 AFFERD National Convention.
