Ellen Griffin

Ellen Jean Griffin graduated from Woman's College (now UNCG) in 1940 with a degree in Physical Education, then immediately joined the faculty of the same department. She taught at the University until 1968, and later at her own golf teaching facility, The Farm. In 1962 she was the ladies Professional Golf Association's unanimous selection as national "Teacher of the Year." She received UNCG's Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1980. She was an author, an innovator, a master teacher of golf, and a powerful, inspiring influence on hundreds of students, colleagues and friends. Her loves were golf and teaching. She once said, "Through the years, any contribution I have made has been through the only thing I know I can do, and that is through teaching – being in a position to help others do something they want to do better." Ellen Griffin died in 1986.
