- Entering or continuing graduate students studying in Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Kinesiology, or Public Health Education.
- Outstanding academic qualifications.
- Intention to conduct research in the area of diversity, specifically issues related to sexual orientation (i.e., homophobia, heterosexism, safe/hate-free environments, pedagogical strategies) and/or women's health and wellness.
- Preference to North Carolina residents (all things being equal in the final evaluation).
- Financial need may be considered.
- Renewable: two years for masters student, three years for doctoral student.

In his 27 years of physical education experience, Ron Morrow has directed health, physical education and recreation departments for YMCAs, taught K-6 Physical Education, served as Physical Education Department Chair of Davidson College, and served as adjunct faculty member of North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University and Barton College. He served as the Executive director of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NCAAHPERD). He received his BS from Western Carolina University, and his MS and Ed.D. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Ron has served as president of the NC Recreation Association, president of the NCAAHPERD, and Vice-President of the Recreation Division of the Southern District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He has presented lectures and workshops at local, district, and national conferences addressing the issues of homophobia and heterosexism in HPERD fields.
To complete the application, please attach a typewritten research proposal developed within the following guidelines:
a. Title of Research Proposal*
b. A 3-page narrative outlining the rational, significance and methodology for proposed research project. The proposal should be written so that faculty from different disciplines within the School of HHP can make informed judgments about the proposal. Evaluations will be based on the degree to which the request for funds is persuasive and understandable. The following criteria will be used to judge the quality of the proposals.
1) Clarity of purpose and central questions or hypotheses.
2) Importance of proposed work.
3) Appropriateness of theoretical framework.
4) Appropriateness of methodology.
5) Appropriate of data analysis.
6) Budget outlining how funds will be used.
c. The narrative is limited to three single-spaced pages, but an extra page may be added for references or figures if necessary. Uniform margins of 1 inch must be left on the top, bottom, right and left of every page and no condensed typefaces can be used. Twelve- point font should be used.
d. Two letters of recommendation, both placed in sealed envelopes with recommender’s signature across the flap. One of the letters should be from the applicant’s major advisor. Both letters should address: quality of significance of the proposed project, qualifications of applicant to undertake the work; quality of applicant’s academic standing.
