Welcome to the exciting new School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) during our first year - a year of transitions!
Although we became official, as a result of academic realignment, on July 1, 2011, faculty, staff, students and alumni will be working during 2011-12 on the many facets of forming a new school!
HHS departments and programs are located in 6 buildings:
- The Ferguson building houses Communication Sciences & Disorders and the Therapeutic Recreation lab of the Department of Community and Therapeutic Recreation.
- The Stone Building houses Nutrition, Human Development & Family Studies, and Social Work.
- HHP Building houses Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology, Public Health Education,and the main offices & classrooms of the NEW Guilford County Schools Health and Human Sciences Early Middle College.
- The Genetic Counseling Program is located at 119 McIver Street.
- McIver Building houses the the Gerontology Program.
- The HHS Office of Academic Outreach is located on Oakland Avenue,
- The Speech and Hearing Program (and Telepractice) is located at the Gateway University Research Park North Campus.
The Centers and special programs are all around campus. So, to visit the new School wear your walking shoes!
All of our faculty members, staff and students are committed to improving the human condition. We try to improve people and institutions, working to make the world better, safer, healthier, more just and more humane. The School of Health and Human Sciences, through our seven departments, three programs, two School Centers and three departmental Centers values diversity, community engagement, and balance in the life-long development of the total person.
We have many special degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, there are five doctoral programs in HHS. Many of our graduate programs are accredited and/or nationally ranked and we pride ourselves on our community outreach and scholarship of engagement. The new School will highlight community engagement and other forms of research, outstanding teaching, and service to the citizens of Greensboro, the region, the state, nation and the world. Through intersecting disciplines and collaboration with faculty within the school and around campus, this exciting new combination of faculty and students in HHS should be quite exciting to watch!
Once a month I will have “talk to the dean sessions,” where anyone—faculty, staff, students, alumni, administrators—can pop in for a short visit. See the HHS web site for the dates, times and locations of these sessions.
Watch the HHS web site for information about our HHS Realignment Task force, working in the summer for fall preparation to launch the new School. They are helping to construct the various committees that will be working on the establishment of the new school. We will have new traditions, a new culture, and new colleagues!
For our alumni of HHS—whether you were alumni of Arts and Sciences, Health and Human Performance, Human Environmental Sciences, or the Graduate School—you will now have “dual citizenship,” as I do! I graduated from a program in Arts and Sciences that moved to Health and Human Performance, and now is moving to Health and Human Sciences…triple citizenship! Whatever your past alumni affiliation, join me as a fellow alumna/i in becoming part of HHS. Watch for exciting news in the fall as we form a new HHS Alumni Association, affiliated with the UNCG Alumni Association.
