Graduate Program Homepage Requirements for the Post-Baccalaureate Certificates in Museum Studies and Historic Preservation The Departments of History and Interior Architecture jointly offer two Post-Baccalaureate Certificates: museum studies and historic preservation. The two certificates provide graduate students training and credentials to pursue careers in history museums, historic preservation, cultural resource management, management of historic sites, and related public history professions. Both certificates require 15 semester hours of course work. Certificate students must meet all requirements for admission to The Graduate School in one of the sponsoring departments and will be able to pursue a master's degree simultaneously. Graduate students in related fields such as applied geography, art or public policy may also pursue a certificate while completing their graduate degrees. Certificate requirements include 9-12 hours of core courses and 3-6 hours of electives. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all certificate course work. No more than 3 semester hours of C+ or C will count towards a certificate. Required Courses (9-12 hours) Museum Studies (9 hours) IAR 626 Management and Leadership in Public History (3) IAR 627 Museum and Historic Site Interpretation: Principles and Practice (3) * IAR 690 Internship (3) 6 hours of electives approved by the Director of Graduate Study Historic Preservation (12 hours) IAR 543 Historic Preservation: Principles and Practice (3) IAR 624 History of American Landscapes and Architecture (3) IAR 625 Preservation Planning and Law (3) * IAR 690 Internship (3) 3 hours of electives approved by the Director of Graduate Study * Students with appropriate professional work experience may substitute an elective for the internship requirement with prior approval of the Director of Graduate Study.
