Specific Requirements of the M.S. in Interior Architecture

The Department Interior Architecture offers a graduate program of study leading to a Master of Science degree requiring a minimum of 36 hours. Eighteen (18) hours are taken in the major area and 12 hours are taken in a concentration or an individual area of specialization. An additional 6 hours are taken as thesis hours. At least 18 hours of the degree hours must be in 600-level courses. The Director of Graduate Study and the student's graduate committee assist the student in developing an individualized plan of course work. The requirements include:

  1. Studio Courses (6-18 hours, at least one studio required)
    • IAR 501-Advanced Interior Archtecture I (6)
    • IAR 502-Advanced Interior Architecture II (6)
    • IAR 602-Advanced Interior Architecture III (6)
  2. Research Techniques (9 hours)
    • IAR 631-Environmental Design Research (3)
    • IAR 645-Seminar in Interior Architecture (3) or approved alternative.

    Also, a student will take an additional 3 hours of research methods courses approved by the student's committee, such as statistics, advanced computer science, or other research methods courses appropriate to the student's concentration or area of specialization.

  3. Electives (12 hours)

    With prior approval of the Director of Graduate Study or the student's committee, a student will select 12 hours in the concentration or area of specialization or focus.

  4. Comprehensive Examination

    At the completion of a student's course work, a written examination is required. An oral examination may be required at the discretion of the student's committee.

    A thesis is required of all M. S. candidates. Credit may be divided over two or more semesters.
