2004 Snow Show

Fifteen students from the Department of Interior Architecture recently returned from northern Finland where they participated in an international art and architecture event entitled The Snow Show.

Under the direction of interior architecture faculty member Ericka Hedgecock, the group worked alongside professional workers and student volunteers from all over the world to construct site-specific installations from snow and ice. The group from UNCG was one of only two American universities to participate and included second and third year interior architecture students Riann Adams, Ioana Balasa, Kelley Bozarth, Addie Brown, Sarah Margaret Carroll, Erin Davis, Bailey Gatens, Katie Holmes, Laurel Jackson, Awena Krell, Callie Narron, Caity Osborn, Cindy Stelmech, Amanda Whittemore and Catherine Young.

In exchange for two weeks work at the site, the student volunteers were provided accommodations and meals. Additionally, they were invited to attend the opening ceremonies and symposium.

The Snow Show is a unique cultural project involving the works of internationally recognized architects and artists who collaborate in the design of temporary installations at one of two sites in Finland’s Lapland. Among the architects involved were Tadao Ando, Diller + Scofidio, Morphosis, Williams + Tsien, LOT-ek and Zaha Hadid. Artists involved in the project include Yoko Ono, Kiki Smith, Top Changtrakul, Ernesto Neto, John Roloff, and Rachel Whiteread.

The UNCG group was invited to participate in the Finnish media channel’s coverage of The Snow Show. For more information, visit http://www.thesnowshow.net.
