Major:  The Asian Studies major is a 30 semester hour major comprised of:

• 6 hours of course work, at the 300-level or higher, in one of the foreign languages of Asia (especially Japanese and Mandarin Chinese; other Asian languages may be approved by the Director);
• 6 hours of IGS core courses (IGS 233 A or B* and IGS 400);
• 18 hours of course work on international and/or global topics corresponding to the four conceptual categories of IGS (society and politics; economics and development; arts and literature; belief systems and cultures), at least 12 of which must deal principally with Asia.

Second Major:  Must meet the same requirements as Majors, with at least 12 hours taken outside the student's first major.

Minor:  Required to complete 18 hours including the foreign language requirement (6 hours), core courses (6 hours), and other international elective courses (6 hours).

Please Note: *Until 300-level courses in Japanese and Chinese are routinely available at UNCG, students will be advised to complete the requirement by studying at one of our multiple study-abroad partnerships in Japan, China, Singapore, or Taiwan.
Asian Studies majors will be advised (but not required) to complete an IGS 233A (non-western) course that deals with Asia as well as an IGS 400 focused on Asia.
