New Disney Exchange for Chilean Students

On Sunday, August 10, ten eager students from Santiago, Chile, arrived at the Faculty Center on campus.  These students are embarking upon a new exchange program having been awarded scholarships from the Chilean Ministry of Education. UNCG regularly receives exchange students on the Disney College Program each semester through the Bryan School of Business, but the difference this time is that the students will be English Education majors, practicing their spoken English and learning about how to teach it to non-native speakers.

IPC welcomed the following students from the Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educacíon (UMCE), Santiago, Chile:  Nicolás Araya, Natalia Fuentes, Rodrigo Gaete, Daniela Olivares, Ana María Ortiz, Makarena Polanco, Andrea Riveros, and Cristóbal Rodríquez.

The group also included two students from the Universidad Santo Tomás (UTS), Santiago, Chile: Francisco Arredondo and José Ulloa.

The program is piloted by the Chilean students’ mentor Professor Samuel Fernandez, Head of the English Department at Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educacíon, and Dr. Samuel Miller, Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction with the School of Education at UNCG, and Steve Flynn, Ph.D. candidate in ELC.  Together they have worked to build relationships and a program that will allow these exchange students to gain first-hand teaching experience.

“The Ministry of Education in Chile is putting a lot of effort into teaching English,” Professor Fernandez told his students. “English teachers are the most important profession in the country.  If the teachers are good, children will learn English as their second language and will leave the country as engineers. They’ll come back with new businesses, new ideas, and contribute to the economy of the country.  Students are the most important part of our future. I’m so happy that you are here.” Steve Flynn added, “They are the trailblazers of the future.”

Professor Samuel Fernandez came to the U.S. while he was a MA student, on a Fulbright Award, to the University of Kansas. While there he met his best friend who, coincidentally, now lives in Asheville, NC. They planned to reunite briefly before Dr. Fernandez left with his students for Florida.

The Chilean students spent one week on campus at UNCG.  While here they visited the Newcomers School. The Newcomers School is a school just entering its second year of handling newly arrived international children before they are placed into public schools.  It is a culture and language habilitation center and Saturdays the school offers parents school to help newly arrived parents keep up with their children. This is a great opportunity for the Chilean students to see the importance of working with non-native English speakers and the experience will benefit them as future teachers.

Student Andrea Riveros was visibly excited about the program. “Our Government stimulates students to go out and learn. Work, study, leadership—all in one place. We are nervous but the experience will be worth it.” “It is a part of our culture that we are very close to our families,” Andrea said.  “The hardest part was leaving.  It was sad, leaving, but we have a deep responsibility to learn and accomplish as much as possible.” For many of these students it was their first time on a plane, let alone their first time abroad. The experience also comes with the price of leaving behind their close family ties for the semester.

Cristóbal Rodríquez seemed to speak for the class when he said that his biggest concern was being understood, but that teaching was what they are here for and that they want to experience everything that they can.  Steve Flynn understood their concerns but agreed with the importance of this program. “Everything was profoundly changed by my experiences overseas,” Steve said. “What you will learn most is about you, and your place in your own culture.”

This is the first exchange program that UNCG has with Chilean universities and we look forward to a long and productive relationship.
