                 Thanksgiving with Chancellor Brady

Chancellor Brady Celebrates Thanksgiving with International Students!

On November 27, Chancellor Brady invited 30 lucky international students to her home to have a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner. Mijin Chung, a doctoral candidate in Counseling and Educational Development, was invited to the meal and this article is about her time at Bryan House.

Mijin: I learned that one well-known Thanksgiving tradition is to share with others something we are thankful for, and I want to share with you all what I said: “I am thankful for having family away from family on this Thanksgiving Day.” Thank you, Chancellor Brady! I felt very welcome and truly at home.

UNCG Celebrates International Education Week!

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education and is promoted all over the world. November 17 through November 21, 2008.  One particular success of the week was the ACIREMA simulation.  Over 30 staff members from around UNCG and 12 co-facilitators participated in a successful activity on Thursday afternoon.  Following the lively simulation, participants had the opportunity to hear from two of our international students, Bellah Kiteki and Pinaz Kale, on their experiences in preparing to come for studies in the U.S.

Faculty-Led Summer Abroad in Mexico!

This past summer, nine students along with three faculty members—Drs. Belinda Hardin and Joe Gunn, and graduate student Jeanne Wakefield—visited the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico as part of an SES (Specialized Education Services) class.  The class is certainly open to all majors and students at UNCG, but this year’s group was mostly Special Education majors.  In the last 10-15 years demographics in North Carolina schools have changed.  North Carolina has one of the largest immigrant communities in the country and Mexican immigrants make up the largest group in this community.  These UNCG students are future teachers and will be working with children and families from all communities and so it seemed an ideal opportunity to take them to Mexico and immerse them in the culture to enhance their understanding and get to know people on a personal basis.

North Carolina International Student Leadership Conference Report

On November 1-2, UNCG hosted the 2008 International Student Leadership Conference and it was a great achievement. Many months of organizing were involved and the great efforts paid off.  IPC staff members Ajaya Francis, Charlotte Ingles, and Brittany Atkinson led a workshop titled “Making the Most of Your Undergraduate Experience,” which focused on inspiring all students to think about how to get the most out of time at university, not just UNCG.  The conference was a great success with many students and professors congregating at UNCG to discuss international leadership.

Students Nominated to Study Abroad Spring 2009 Announced!

Congratulations go to the following students who will be studying abroad for the spring semester, 2009.  IPC would like to wish them well on their adventures and we look forward to hearing about them when they get back!

INTERLINK Update!

INTERLINK had 45 new students arrive in October and kicked the term off with a pizza party at College Park Baptist Church.  Students and teachers met at the church between classes to enjoy refreshments and get to know each other, and also celebrate October birthdays with cake and ice cream.  We also held a Halloween celebration at INTERLINK office where teachers brought in pies, cakes, and cookies and everyone dressed in costume.  Later that evening, a group of students went to carve pumpkins and greet trick-or-treaters.  These events helped INTERLINK students to understand and enjoy the holiday in true American fashion.
