Dr. Charles Orzech Visits China

This June, Dr. Charles Orzech, Professor in the Department of Religious Studies, traveled to China for site visits and lectures.

Dr. Orzech was first in Beijing where he gave two invited lectures on recent Western scholarship on Chinese Buddhism. These lectures were held for the Department of Chinese Classics at Renmin University, and the Department of Overseas Sinology at the Beijing Waiguoyu University (Beijing Foreign Languages University).

For the past year, Dr. Orzech has been the Henry Luce Fellow at the National Humanities Center, where he has been working on a monograph on medieval Chinese Buddhist pilgrimage. During his travels, he visited two important sites connected with this research: the Dunhuang on the Silk Road, and Wutaishan in Shanxi, which is still an active Buddhist pilgrimage site.
