Welcome to New International Students!

Denise Bellamy helps exchange student Florine Gall (from Lyon) in finding her way around campus.

During the week of August 16, the International Programs Center welcomed 109 new international exchange students and 94 degree-seeking students to UNCG. The week consisted of two different orientation schedules for the two groups, with Denise Bellamy and Kaitlin Ritchie leading the exchange student orientation and Michael Elliott and Norma Velazquez orienting the new international degree-seeking students. The new students had the opportunity to meet each other during several picnics and socials. IPC hosted a pizza party on Monday night and an American-style picnic on Wednesday. The students also attended some back-to-school parties and events on campus, including a UNCG women’s soccer game on Friday night.

IPC introduced a new aspect to their orientation this semester: riding the HEAT bus. The HEAT (Higher Education Area Transit) bus services all the universities and colleges in Greensboro and brings students to various areas around town, such as the Friendly Shopping Center, Four Seasons Mall, WalMart Shopping Center, and downtown Greensboro. All UNCG students can ride the bus for free with their student ID card. Our new international students brought themselves around to the various shopping areas to purchase dorm and school supplies, as well as just to shop around and enjoy the company of their fellow students. We hope they will continue to utilize the HEAT bus service throughout the semester!

Overall, orientation was once again a successful endeavor. Best of luck to our international students as they commence this fall semester!
