All UNCG international students are required by university policy to purchase the medical insurance policy selected by the university. Our International Programs Center (IPC) staff has done a thorough investigation of policies and chooses the policy that offers the best coverage for the most reasonable cost. IPC has chosen HTH Worldwide to provide our students with health insurance coverage. To view the HTH policy, please click:

For all continuiing international students the health insurance premium will be charged to your UNCG student account by the end of April for the upcoming fall semester, and for all new international students arriving in the fall, will be billed by the end of August.
The health insurance premium for the upcoming spring and summer semesters will be charged to your student account by the end of December for those who are continuing international students and by the end of January for the new international students arriving in the spring.
If you are withdrawing or transferring, please notify IPC by the second week of August for the current fall semester, and by the second week of January for the current spring semester.
If you fail to notify IPC of your withdrawal or transfer, you will be required to pay for the student health insurance premium, regardless of whether you are eligible for the health insurance or not. To be eligible for the student health insurance you are required to be enrolled full time at UNCG (unless it is your last semester).
If you are dropped for lack of payment or failure to attend classes, you are still required to notify IPC of your situation by the deadlines mentioned above to have your charges removed and your immigration status updated.
If you will be graduating in the spring session, please note that you will still be required to purchase the spring and summer health insurance coverage. This ensures sufficient health insurance coverage for our students applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which is the majority of our graduating international students. The other graduating international students can also benefit from this coverage, while traveling in the US, prior to their departure.
HTH Worldwide requires that international students be registered full time and there are no forms to fill out. HTH is our mandatory health insurance provider for international students on F-1 or J-1 visas, unless you qualify for one of the three exceptions listed below.
Failure to enroll in the medical insurance policy may result in cancellation of your course registration which will place you out of school and thus out of status with immigration.
There are three exceptions to the requirement to purchase the mandatory university insurance policy. If any of the three exceptions below apply to you, please provide the required documentation to IPC by the end of August to be eligible for the insurance waiver for the fall semester, and by the end of January to be eligible for the insurance waiver for the spring and summer semesters.
- 1. If you have a documented pre-existing medical condition (which must be confirmed by UNCG's Student Health Services Staff), you may be waived from the requirement.
- 2. If you are supported financially through a government or corporate organization and medical insurance is included as a part of the support, you may be waived from the requirement. You must provide documentation of such coverage to the International Student Advisor and continue to update IPC with current documentation as coverage expires.
- 3. If you are included as a dependent on a US medical insurance policy which meets the same minimal coverage standards, you may be waived from the requirement. You must provide documentation of such coverage to the International Student Advisor.
If you have questions about these waiver conditions, or need to enquire about the proper documents to provide for the waiver, or about the medical insurance requirement policy, please contact IPC. If you have questions regarding the medical insurance policy itself, or need to file a claim, call HTH @ 1-800-242-4178.
This should not be confused with the student health fee which all full-time students pay to the university as a part of their tuition and fees. That fee is strictly for access to Student Health Services, the on-site medical clinic. The medical insurance requirement is related to meeting expenses beyond what can be covered through UNCG's Student Health Services such as hospitalization or specialized medical services.
All enrolled students must supply current immunization information. For details please visit our Immunization Requirements page.
