All UNCG F & J international students are required by university policy to purchase the medical insurance policy selected by the university (unless they meet one of the exceptions below).  Information about the student health insurance plan and the Student Health Center may be found at http://shs.uncg.edu/about/policies/insurance.

Health Insurance Charges

Fall Semester – Continuing international students will be charged the fall semester health insurance premium directly to the UNCG student account, normally after pre-registration but by the end of April for the upcoming fall semester.   New international students arriving in the fall will be billed by the end of August. The premium period for the fall semester runs from August 1st to December 31st.

Spring Semester – Continuing international students will be charged the spring semester health insurance premium directly to the UNCG student account, normally after pre-registration but by the end of December for the upcoming spring semester.   New international students arriving in the spring will be billed by the end of January. The premium period for the spring semester runs from January 1st to to July 31st.

Enrollment

While international students will be automatically assessed the student health insurance premium on the student account, enrollment with the health insurance company is still necessary.  Please enroll each semester for student health insurance by visiting at http://shs.uncg.edu/about/policies/insurance.

Withdrawal or Transferring Notifications

If you are withdrawing or transferring, please notify IPC as soon as possible at the beginning of the semester.

Graduating Students

If you will be graduating in the spring session, please note that you will still be required to purchase the spring health insurance coverage which will carry you through July.

Mandatory Insurance Provider

UNCG and the student health insurance company require that international students be registered full time (unless approved through the IPC for less than full time enrollment).

Failure to enroll in the medical insurance policy may result in cancellation of your course registration, thus causing issues with your UNCG and immigration status.

Exceptions

There are two exceptions to the requirement to purchase the mandatory university insurance policy. If you believe that one of the two exceptions below apply to you, please submit the waiver request form with supporting documentation to IPC by the end of the second week of the semester in order to be considered for a waiver.  PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT A NEW WAIVER REQUEST FORM IS REQUIRED FOR EACH SEMESTER.

The two exceptions for consideration are government/corporate sponsorship of finances and dependent medical care (both are described in more detail below).

If you are a J-1 international exchange student, please submit your completed waiver request form to Kaitlin Ritchie, Incoming Exchange Coordinator of Study Abroad and Exchange Programs (207 Foust Building).  If you are an F-1 degree seeking international student, please submit your completed waiver request to Norma Velazquez, Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services (103 Foust Building).  PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WAIVE STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE THROUGH THE UNCG STUDENT HEALTH CENTER OR THE STUENT HEALTH INSURANCE WEBSITES. All waiver requests must be submitted and adjudicated by the IPC.  The two exceptions are as follows:

  1. If you are supported financially through a government or corporate organization and medical insurance is included as a part of the support, you may be waived from the requirement. You must provide documentation of such coverage to the International Student Advisor and continue to update IPC with current documentation as coverage expires.
  2. If you are included as a dependent of a primary individual residing in the United States who carries a U.S. based medical insurance policy which meets the same minimal coverage standards, you may be waived from the requirement. You must provide documentation of such coverage to the International Student Advisor.

If you have questions about these waiver conditions, the proper documents to provide for the waiver, or about the medical insurance requirement policy, please contact IPC.  For information about the health insurance cost and coverage, please visit http://www.uncg.edu/shs/about/insurance.  (Back to the top.)

Student Health Fee

The student health insurance company should not be confused with the student health fee which all students taking nine (9) or more credit hours pay to the university as a part of their tuition and fees.  The student health fee provides "prepaid" access to student health services and the on-site medical clinic for office visits. Health insurance offsets the cost of on-campus medical services not covered under the student health fee (lab tests, x-rays, etc.) and covers a large portion of costs for services not available on the UNCG campus, such as hospitalization, required surgery or specialty services for illnesses or injuries.

All enrolled students must supply current immunization information. For details please visit our Immunization Requirements page.
