UNCG Music Faculty Explores Time Jan. 29

GREENSBORO — The UNCG School of Music continues its Artist Faculty Chamber Series on Thursday, Jan. 29, with a diverse program dedicated to “Time.”  The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the School of Music Recital Hall, on the corner of West Market and McIver streets.

The concert will showcase music that explores the philosophical and practical aspects of time. Dr. Gregory Carroll of the School of Music’s Department of Composition, History and Theory will tie the pieces together through insightful commentary.

The opening selection will be variations on George Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm,” performed by Joseph Di Piazza and Paul Stewart on piano.

The second piece will be Vally Weigl’s “Beyond Time – Song Cycle from Frederika Blankner’s ‘Secret Bread.’ ” The tender, introspective composition will be presented by Nancy Walker (soprano), Deborah Egekvist (flute) and Tim Lindeman (piano).

The concert will change gears for Herman Hupfeld’s “As Time Goes By.” The 1931 tune first came to fame after Dooley Wilson sang its familiar lyrics in the 1942 film “Casablanca.” Hupfeld’s composition has been arranged for trio by John Salmon, who will perform the piece on piano, joined by Steve Haines (bass) and Thomas Taylor (drums).

After intermission, faculty performers will present Olivier Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time.” Written in 1940 while Messiaen was interned in a German concentration camp, the composition is based on a passage in the Book of Revelation, in which an angel appears to announce “there should be time no longer.” Featured musicians will include John Fadial (violin), Brooks Whitehouse (violoncello), Kelly Burke (clarinet) and Andrew Willis (piano).

Tickets are available by calling (336) 334-4849 or by visiting the university box office, with locations in Elliott University Center and the School of Music, weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. Prices are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and non-UNCG students and $3 for UNCG students.
