Jackson Library Admitted to Regional Research Library Association

GREENSBORO — Jackson Library at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Triad’s premier research facility, has been admitted into the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, the largest of the regional research library consortia in the United States. The organization has more than three dozen academic libraries and eight state libraries as members.

The membership recognizes Jackson Library’s growth in recent years. The library now ranks with other research libraries, including those at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, Duke University and Wake Forest.

“Admission to ASERL is a recognition of Jackson Library’s growing stature in the academic library community,” said University Librarian Doris Hulbert. “We continue to develop our print and electronic resources to meet the needs of a research institution.”

Jackson Library’s collections total more than 2.7 million books, federal and state documents, microforms and other formats. The one-millionth print volume was acquired in 2001. Of special value to researchers are the university archives and special collections, which include more than 4 million additional items. Members of the library faculty also have created and maintain more than 3,000 unique Web pages on subjects ranging from rare books and manuscripts to databases containing thousands of full-text electronic journals and e-books. More than 400 classes were offered at the library last year.

One new feature that is drawing interest from other university libraries is Jackson’s new Journal Finder feature, which allows users to link directly to specific journals from the library catalog. Staff members are invited to present this model feature at libraries all over the country.

Membership in ASERL will help Jackson Library further expand. ASERL sponsored projects include competency guidelines for research librarians, document delivery among select members, and Kudzu, a virtual library system that links the catalogs of 16 ASERL libraries.

Members of the community help support the library through Friends of Jackson Library, which sponsors events and visiting lecturers, advocates for the library, and provides funding support. More information about becoming a member is available by calling (336) 334-5880.
