DR. PETER ALFONSO JOINS UNCG AS
ASSOCIATE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH
GREENSBORO--Dr. Peter J. Alfonso, a professor and department head at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been appointed associate provost for research at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Alfonso has assumed his new position. The appointment was announced by UNCG Provost Dr. Edward Uprichard.
"I am pleased that Peter Alfonso has joined the University as associate provost for research," said Uprichard. "He brings exceptional scholarly credentials to the position, along with an excellent record of securing federal funding for research projects.
"Faculty extramural support at UNCG has increased dramatically over the past five years, and the associate provost for research will be instrumental in continuing this trend. As the University's chief research officer, Dr. Alfonso will be providing bold leadership to advance UNCG's mission related to research, scholarship and creative activity. I am looking forward to his contributions at UNCG."
As associate provost for research, Alfonso will be responsible for the oversight of the Office of Research Services. He will work with the director of the Office of Research Services in administering UNCG's internally sponsored and externally funded research programs. Alfonso will also oversee the Office of Grants and Contracts, the Center for the Study of Social Issues, the Institute for Health, Science and Society and will play a leading role in university related economic and community development, and state and federal relations.
Before coming to UNCG, Alfonso was at the University of Illinois-U-C from 1992-99. He held multiple appointments, including professor and head of the Department of Speech and Hearing Science and director of the clinical services in the department. He also served on a university task force examining the feasibility and formulation of a College of Health and Human Development. Earlier, from 1977-91, he taught and conducted research at the University of Connecticut and Haskins Laboratories in New Haven, Conn.
From 1997-98, he was an American Council on Education Fellow at Indiana University at Bloomington. During that year, he held assignments in the offices of the president, vice president for research and chancellor of the institution. He also is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
In his career, Alfonso has received federal research grants totaling over $14 million and federal training grants of more than $852,000. He was a Fulbright Research Scholar from 1990-91 at the University of Nijmegen in The Netherlands, where he also served as a visiting researcher from 1992-97. He also held visiting researcher appointments at the University of Padova in Italy and at the University of Tokyo. A graduate of the University of Connecticut, he holds the master's degree from Western Michigan University and the Ph.D. degree from Purdue University.
