STUDENTS HELP WITH FLOOD RELIEF, SEE DAMAGE

GREENSBORO--Students, faculty and volunteers from The University of North Carolina at  Greensboro and N.C. A&T State University got to see the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd first-hand when they visited the flood-ravaged towns of Wilson and Princeville during a recent  Saturday of volunteer work.

The 25-member group spent the day clearing a home which had been flooded. All of the furniture, appliances and personal possessions were removed, along with the carpeting and linoleum.

The service project was sponsored by the department of social work at UNCG and N.C. A&TSU, along with the AmeriCorps ACCESS Program at UNCG. In addition to the cleaning, AmeriCorps members also visited the homes of unemployed Spanish speaking farmworkers to identify needs, distribute food and distribute health education information.

Coordinating the service activity were Dr. John Rife, head of the UNCG Department of Social Work; Dr. Raleigh Bailey, director of the AmeriCorps project at UNCG; Prof. Velma Tyrance of N.C. A&TSU.

Participating students and AmeriCorps members were Connie Holt, Jason Holt, Sara Ward, Vandy Chhum, Shonny Williams, Shaunette Johnson, Melody Moore, Lanea Foster, Hanah Gill, Alma Almazon, Lisa Clark, Nikki Meadows, Tenagne Selassie, Weyenshet Selassie, Aicla Somunegus, Safo Vay, Alan Vay, Loan Ho, Kathy Moore, Yi Kong, Chamreen Kong, and Ran Kong from Salem College.
