DR. DIANE GILL IS PRESIDENT OF APA DIVISION

GREENSBORO -- Dr. Diane Gill, professor and head of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is serving as president of Division 47 (exercise and sport psychology) of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Gill will serve a two-year term. Founded in 1986, the division’s purpose is to advance understanding of the psychological aspects of exercise and sport and to foster scholarly activities, practice and interest in this area of specialization. Division 47 has nearly 1,000 members and is part of the 151,000-member APA.

This summer, Gill gave invited addresses at two international conferences. In Taiwan, she spoke at the 1999 Chinese Taipei University Conference of Sport and Physical Education, held in June at Fu Jen University in Taipei. Her keynote address was titled: "Taking Control of the Mental Game: Psychological Skills for Sport and Physical Education."

In July, she attended the European Congress of Sport Psychology (FEPSAC), which was held in Prague, Czech Republic. Her paper on "The Role of Physical Activity Across the Adult Lifespan" was presented with colleagues from the University of Virginia and Purdue University.

A UNCG faculty member since 1987, Gill served as associate dean of the School of Health and Human Performance from 1992-97. Her research interests in sport and exercise psychology involve the role of physical activity in health and well-being across the life-span.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, she is a past president of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, former editor of The Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology and past president of the research consortium of the AAHPERD. She is author of the book, "The Psychological Dynamics of Sport."
