UNCG BUILDS NEW RESEARCH GREENHOUSE
GREENSBORO —The growing pains have ended for botanists at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, thanks to a new 3,000-square-foot research greenhouse.
The roominess, efficient climate control, and supplemental lighting for cloudy winter days enable scientists to make important contributions to plant research, especially on crop plants which need specific conditions in which to flourish. Previous work had been somewhat hampered by the university’s antiquated 800-square-foot greenhouse, which served as both a teaching and research facility.
Plant researchers play an important role in modern biology -- and especially at UNCG -- which has secured more than $1 million in external grant in the past three years.
It is hoped research on soybean plants now growing in the greenhouse will lead to improvements in agriculture in North Carolina and the United States. Canola plants and their wild relative plant are being tested to assess the bio-safety of genetically engineered plants.
The new facility features a head house for potting, and is equipped with a shower and storage. Cost for the greenhouse was $275,000.
