NATIONAL MENTOR AWARD GOES TO DR. KIVETT

GREENSBORO -- Dr. Vira R. Kivett, who is the Elizabeth Rosenthal Excellence Professor emerita at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has received the 1999 Distinguished Mentorship Award in Gerontology from the social and behavioral sciences section of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA).

Kivett received the award at the association's 52nd annual Scientific Meeting, held Nov. 21, in San Francisco. The award honors individuals who have fostered excellence and who have had a major impact on the field of gerontology by virtue of their mentoring, and whose inspiration is sought by students and colleagues. The GSA is one of the largest professional organizations in the field of gerontology, with over 5,000 members in its four sections. The behavioral sciences section is the largest, with over 2,500 members.

Kivett was a faculty member for 39 years in the UNCG Department of Human Development and Family Studies. She held the Elizabeth Rosenthal Excellence Professorship before retiring last spring. She is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of social gerontology and one of the foremost scholars on rural aging. She has published more than 70 articles about her research in journals. She also has presented at more than 80 state, regional, national and international meetings and before the Select Committee on Aging of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Her service on behalf of the elderly helped to earn Kivett the 1996 O. Max Gardner Award, which is the highest honor the UNC Board of Governors can bestow on one of the system's faculty members. Other honors include a Fulbright Award to the United Kingdom, the Distinguished Academic Gerontologist Award from the Southern Gerontological Society and a Certificate of Appreciation from the State of North Carolina for contributions to public policy on aging. She is a Fellow in the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education.
