DR. LAURA LINDER OF UNCG HAS NEW BOOK PUBLISHED
GREENSBORO--Dr. Laura
R. Linder, an assistant professor of media studies at The University of
North Carolina at Greensboro, is the author of a new book "Public Access
Television: America's Electronic Soapbox," which was published recently
by Praeger Publishers.
The book illustrates how
public access television has addressed and can address the problems of
concentrated media ownership. Those problems include the narrowing of the
range of opinions in the mass media and decreasing coverage of local issues,
said Linder.
The book reviews the history,
regulations and current status of public access television. It also identifies
key factors that will affect the future of public access television, and
offers recommendations for securing the future of the "electronic soapbox"
in the 21st century.
At UNCG, Linder teaches
media law and ethics, introduction to media studies and directing for television.
Her experience in mass media includes working as a production coordinator
for WFMY-TV. She also was managing editor of Carolina Film/Southeast Film,
regional trade publications, during the mid-1980s. She holds undergraduate
and master's degrees form UNCG and received her Ph.D. degree from
UNC-Chapel Hill.
In 1998, she was among 17
persons who were selected to attend the faculty seminar of the Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation. In addition to her book, Linder
is the author of three entries in the "History of the Mass Media in the
United States: An Encyclopedia." Among her community activities, Linder
is secretary and founding president of the board of directors of Greensboro
Community Television; first vice-chair of the Guilford County Democratic
Party; a member and a past president of Citizens for Responsible Government.
